Hello all!! Welcome back to another great week! I took this weekend off for myself and it was amazing! My husband took care of the kiddos on his own for a night and I got to check into a hotel for some mommy away time. It was incredible and I’ll be talking about it in another post soon.

I hope you have all been having a great time cleaning OUT your homes and getting them organized. Are you feeling a bit lighter and are you having more clarity with your thoughts? It is just so amazing what we can do for our health when we clear out the clutter.

Now that our homes have it all together, it is time to turn our focus or getting our lives organized. I know what you are thinking, can I really get it together? Yes, you can! Will it be perfect everyday? NO! That’s the beauty of life, none of us are perfect, but we can all try our best each day.

The first thing I began doing at the end of 2018 and starting into 2019 was really looking at all of the various events, projects, hobbies, and just general stuff I was trying to do. What conclusion did I come to? I can’t do it all. No one can, and we are going to wear ourselves out trying. I was simply trying to do too much, and it was really stressing me out and bringing me down. I want you to take some time to do a little life audit of your own. What is on your plate? What can you take off?

One thing I have started trying to implement into my planning, if it isn’t a “heck yes” it’s a “heck no” when looking at events, projects, etc. I used to be the type of person who would say yes to pretty much everything. Don’t get me wrong, I love helping; I just found that’s actually what started bringing me down. I began putting everyone else’s needs before my own. I would exhaust myself trying to plan or help with multiple events, projects, etc and it felt like I could just never stop and take a breath.

From there I looked at the various things I was trying to do and thought about which ones didn’t bring me joy, or that I truly didn’t have time to be doing. This is when you have to be the most honest with yourself. For me at least two of the things I said I wasn’t going to do anymore: large events and Poshmark. I love planning events and hosting people in my home. However, the two large parties we do at the end of the year were just way too much for me in 2018. I found that I wasn’t feeling the fun and joy I had in the past. It was tiring, tedious, and actually left me frustrated. This is simply not healthy, so I said no more to them this year.

One thing that helped me really flip the light switch was when I caught myself saying, “Well, if I don’t do it, no one else will.” Then it hit me, WHO CARES?! If other people want to have these parties, they can plan them, they can host them! I had to tell myself that I do not have to be the only one doing all of these things, and if some of them don’t happen, it’s fine and the world is going to keep right on turning.

As for Poshmark, when I first started I felt like I was doing great and selling items, but then it slowed down. I tried keeping up with sharing items, sharing my own listings, etc. I have two kids, and a busy enough life, yet I still really thought that I could maintain this as well. Truth be told, I couldn’t. This app takes a lot of time and you have to share your listings almost constantly to continue to make sales. Now, please don’t get me wrong here this app can be wonderful if you have the time to focus on it! Once we added our second daughter I just didn’t have the time, and I had to be honest with myself about it. I loved the aspect of making a little extra money, and when I had the time, I did! I just knew that for me, it was time to turn my focus to other areas. I had to let go of some of this stress.

We are only two weeks into the new year, and I must say, I am already feeling so much better in many different areas of my life. Doing a personal life audit was hard at first, but I am so thankful that I was able to sit down and be completely honest with myself. I took the time to remind myself that just because I was letting go of some tasks, I in no way was a failure because of them. I am choosing a better, healthier life style, and that is a win in my book!

I want you to go do the same now. Take some time this week to sit down and really look at what is on your schedule, what things are you trying to do that you can let go of? Are you volunteering up your time a little too much? Saying yes a little too quickly? Trying to do way too many things at once? It is time to take back some of YOUR time and ease your stress.

Organize Your House, Organize Your Life – Kitchen Continued

Welcome back! As promised, here are a few other areas of my kitchen I have organized. I’ll take you through what is located in each section and what items I used to organize it all out.

Pots & Pans

This cupboard can always get people because it can be an awkward mess! Our cupboard space is great, we just weren’t utilizing it correctly. I finally purchased a Pan Organizer and used it to sort out the lids for the various pans. I then sorted out our pans and stacked them by type, then size. I was hoping to use another Pan Organizer for my frying pans, unfortunately the shelf is the back is too low and doesn’t adjust. Making this change (and of course we cleared some stuff out of it prior to organizing it) has made it so much easier for us to get to items while preparing dinner, baking, etc!

Baking Cupboard

I love baking! It brings me such joy, especially when I am able to bake for others. My baking cupboard was MESS though! Cupcake pans and racks awkwardly stacked, stuff everywhere, ugh, it drove me nuts! I used another Pan Organizer to sort out my various baking pans and cooling racks. I was able to sort and “nest” the square baking pans I have; meaning they were able to go one inside the other like a Russian Nesting Doll. One of my other favorite organizing bins pieces are these Storage Boxes. They are such a great size and are perfect for sorting our a large variety of items. I use mine to sort out cookie cutters, cake supplies, and cupcake/decorating supplies.Whatever item I need, I just have to grab one box and my cupboard doesn’t become a disaster again.

Spice Cupboard

The spice cupboard is another area that can just be a swirling vortex of terror. It seems that everything can just end up jammed in there, even if we try to keep it “organized”, it still give us a lot of difficultly to find anything. I am just so happy with how this cupboard turned out after I attacked it! The top shelf I used for our taco items, because we all love tacos, and there are only a few items that can lie flat. The second shelf I used two of these Turntables to sort out our various herbs and spices. The turntable on the left holds herbs and items of that sort, and they are in alphabetical order. The others turntable has all of our spices, also in alphabetical order. Now it takes me almost no time to find what I need as I am preparing a meal. For the bottom shelf I maximized our space by using this Expandable Shelf and sorted items by which I use most, meaning those go in the front. The back shelf I placed any packet mixes, in groups of course, since they are easy to pull out one at a time, The rest was placed in the middle and is easy to get to as well!

Entertaining/Other

We enjoy entertaining through out the year, and have a few items that are used really only during those various events (birthday parties, BBQs, etc). I gave these items their own cupboard space so I don’t have to have them all over the place getting in the way of other pieces in my kitchen. As with every space, I make sure that like items are stored together and that items are stacked in a safe, organized way. Also in this cupboard, since my Keurig is on the counter about it, I keep my boxes of tea! As you can see, I enjoy a variety of teas. One Storage Box holds all the flavors that are caffeinated, the other holds all the herbal and decaf teas. As need I place a few bags in the drawer above this cabinet!

Organize Your House, Organize Your Life – Next Steps

Hello and Happy Monday! How did you do this weekend with finishing up your clean outs and getting those areas organized? How are you feeling as you clean all of this out? I hope you are starting to feel as if a weight is being lifted, and that you are starting to feel some more clarity in your thoughts!

Today we are going to attack that pile you cleared out, and I am going to give you various suggestions on what to do with it all! If you have missed the clean out posts, you can find day one HERE to get started!

As I stated in a previous post, if you were cleaning out your child’s closet, do you have a younger sibling that could wear some of the clothes that are still in nice condition? If so, make sure they are laundered, fold them up and store them in containers like THIS one. These are my favorite because I can easily label them with what size clothing are being stored in it, and I can also see what is in there if I end up needing to find an item quickly. These bins also stack wonderfully!

Clean Out Item Options

What to do with that pile of stuff? Obviously, we want it to go. Here are a few of the things that I have done to help rid of myself of the excess.

  1. Of course there is the first, and most obvious option, find a Thrift Shop in your town, load up the car, and take one trip to drop it off. If this is the option you would like to do, I suggest finding a local Thrift Shop that helps your community directly. Some churches may have location, as well as Humane Society’s. Find one that serves your community in the way that you like the most.
  2. Secondly, as you sort through what items you have, place them into categories. Clothes, home, kitchen, etc. Can certain items be bundled together to be sold? I bundle like sized children’s clothing together and sell them through our local Facebook Sale Groups. If you aren’t sure if you town has one, just search for it! This is an excellent way to not only get some of the items to someone who can use them, but to also earn a little extra money as well.
  3. Garage Sale! This is probably another obvious option. Our neighborhood does a yearly sale in the spring where multiple houses participate. (Participation is, of course, optional!) If you think that this is the avenue you’d like to take for letting go of these excess items, while earning a little bit of extra money, it is a great idea! While garage sales can be a lot of work, if you are well prepared, it won’t be overwhelming. Start early, as Edna Mode says, “Luck favors the prepared.” Start again by sorting your items into categories and deciding how you would like to price them. Pricing always takes the longest when planning a sale, so starting now will not only give you a head start on it, but it will also give you time to go through your home again and see if there are any other items that you can add to your sale. You can price items individually, or you can do a blanket price for certain items. (Example: All Baby clothes, $1.00 per piece.) Or you can allow people to create their own bundles! (Example: DVDs, 6 for $10!) (Please note that I am completely making up numbers, and you should use your best discretion with pricing your own items.)
  4. If you would like to try to make a little bit of money off of the items, but you aren’t sure you want or have the time to sell them yourself, I have two other really good options that will help you. The first, for home and clothing items, you can find local consignment shops. These shops will go through and decide which items they want to try to sell for you. You will not get the money up front, you will get it after they have sold. The shop I use gives you a number and it acts as a sign in on their website, so I can see what items have sold, and which have not. While this may take some time, it gets the items out of your home and will eventually earn you some extra money. If you want to get rid of items, and get money immediately, find your local resale shops. These stores are mostly for clothing, especially popular for kids clothing. These stores will go through your items and decide which items they will take, they will pay you up front for them and that is all the money you will receive.
  5. For name brand/high quality clothing items, you can also try to sell them yourself through Poshmark. Now, this is not going to get these items out of your house, and it can take some time to sell them. You will get a good portion of the money and you choose what price to list the item. This option can also be time consuming as you have to take pictures of the items, create the listings and maintain your “Closet”. Many people have made some good, extra money with this option, it is important to know it is because they have had the time to do so.

Organize Your House, Organize Your Life – Post Three

We have made it to day three, organization day! Sure, some may think we could have focused on one section at a time and do it all at once, however I just think that cleaning out can be a very healthy way to start the new year. It gives us all a clean slate with which to work. Also, as much we might love shopping, I wanted you to make just one trip to the store. Not to mention, can you imagine how many posts I would have had? You would have been tired of hearing from me.

Today you are going to look through all of the areas you cleaned out and consider what you may need in that area to help make it more organized. I suggest grabbing a pencil, paper and tape measure, let’s get started!

I am a BIG fan of bins, totes, racks, and anything that can help me group items together and keep them in place. This will help the areas we have worked on stay tidy, presuming that items are getting placed back where they belong.

As you go through each area, measure the depth, height, and length, and write it down. For kitchens/pantries, and bathrooms, I love THESE from Target. I have used the Medium, Small, and Rectangle for my pantry and baking cupboard. They contain everything nicely and you can see which items are in which bins. While in each area of your house, check out the BINS and see that they have the dimensions in the details section. You’ll be able to measure out the sections to see what will fit and how many you will need.

Below is how I have organized the Kitchen and Bathroom in my house.

Kitchen

In my pantry, I group items together like so:

Breakfast/Cereal*
Sweet Snacks*
Salty Snacks*
Chips/Pretzels*
Candy/Treats*
Daughter’s Lunch Items*
Drink Mixes*
Backup/Extras*
Soups/Canned Chicken
Beans
Broth/Cream Soups
Oils/Vinegars

Each one has their own bin depending on the amount of items needed to go into them. Items with a * are all sorted into the MEDIUM sized bin. The others are all in the RECTANGLE sized bin which are perfect for canned items and tall bottles.

My baking cupboard is organized into the SMALL sized bins sorted this way:

Chocolate/Baking Chips
Powdered Items (Baking Powder/Soda, Corn Starch, etc)
Sprinkles
Candy Melts/Candy Baking Items
Dried/Canned Fruit
Cocoa Powder/Melting Chocolate/Vanilla Extract
Baking/Jello/Pudding Mixes

Also in my baking cupboard I have my Flour and Sugar in THESE canisters, Turbinado Sugar and Arrowroot Powder are stored in THIS size, and my Oats are tucked nicely into one of THESE canisters, all by the Target line Made By Design. My brown sugar and powder sugar are both stored in glass Pyrex containers, and are also in this same cupboard. I use the space on the top shelf to store the bags of extra flour and sugar that will be used to fill in the containers as needed.

Bathroom

I won’t be going into as much detail in my this bathroom section as I did with the kitchens, as I think you get the idea now.

I sort my makeup drawer into two trays that both have multiple compartments. They are similar to THIS one from Target, but I purchased mine, many years ago, from TJ Maxx. As with every other area, I have sorted like items together and given them each a spot. I can see everything clearly and will be able to find each item quickly without having to dig!

I used mesh organizers like THESE in a couple of different sizes. I was able to buy them in individual sizes in store, however can only find the bundle online. Target does have a lot of various options in store to fit your needs! This helps to keep my drawer from getting to messy!

I used the SMALL baskets under my sink to sort the various items I store under there. I also used a small SHELF similar to the one in the link under there as well. Using additional shelfs like that will help you maximize the space, especially in small areas! (They work wonders in kitchens!)

In the drawer where we store all the OTC medications I used THESE trays to sort out the various bottles into like sections. Even my husband went WHOA when I opened this drawer to show him the change I had made. I feel like this would have been a great “before and after” however I was too excited about my trays to take a picture before I cleared it out.

2018 – Year In Review

It’s crazy to think that another year is just hours away from coming to a close. We made it through another 365 days, some were good, some were challenging. Today is definitely the day to look back on how we showed up for each day, and make a plan for how we are going face the next 365.

A few days ago I finally took a little bit of time for just me. I went to my local Barnes & Noble, sat in a comfy chair, and just read. It was the first time, in a very long time I have taken this kind of time for me.

It helped me to be able to reflect and think about how I wanted to approach the next year. I mostly found myself reflecting on the last few months of this year, and how they left me exhausted, stressed, irritable, and very down.

I have loved participating in The Last 90 Days by Rachel Hollis, and really think this helped me to survive the last few months of this year. It helped me to get more active, choose healthier food habits, and really up my water intake! I wasn’t perfect all 90 days, and these last couple of weeks have been a struggle, but I was doing my best.

So why was I so overwhelmed? I was finally completely honest with myself and knew that I had taken on way too much! Each year my husband and I throw two big parties, Halloween and Christmas. Which means all the planning, buying, prepping, set up, hosting, and clean up; and all very close together.

I used to love doing these parties, but something felt off this year. It was because I was trying to be a mom to two girls (which comes with a laundry list of tasks all it’s own), a wife who’s husband has a busy schedule, trying to do daily life, work on myself, had a list of “hobbies” I was trying to work on or start, and planning/hosting various other events. It was all too much, and I felt like I couldn’t say no when people asked for help.

The last 10 days before Christmas break this year, I had over 7 events, some days with multiple events; many of which I was planning, hosting, or for which I was providing items. I’m not sure I slept, or left my kitchen. Most importantly, I wasn’t enjoying it.

I have always been the type of person who, when commits to something, follows through and does her part. I also found myself thinking, “If I don’t do it, no one else will.”

And therein lies my moment. Why must it always be me? Who says I HAVE to do any of this? What does it matter if these parties don’t happen, if we don’t host every event? Why is it always up me to get people together?

So, in 2019, I’m not doing it anymore. It’s time I actually focus on ME, I’m going to cut back on what I commit to doing, focus on my health, and really think about what I really want to do with each day.

I’m currently reading High Performance Habits by Brandon Burchard and am loving the guidance I am already receiving, especially in the areas I really need it.

One thing he suggests is choosing three words to focus on for your year. Mine are: Happy, Motivated, Organized. I want to be a happier, more motivated, and highly organized person. I no longer want to feel stressed, over anxious, and worn down.

My family deserves the best version of me, but also equally important, I deserve the best version of me!

I want you to think about what you want for 2019. What are your words? Write them down, read the often, focus on them!

4 Ways You Can Change The World Today

Change the world? Little old you? Ridiculous. What could you do? After all, you’re not Wonder Woman, and you don’t possess any super powers. You’re not in politics (we are assuming), so unlike the trailblazing AZ sec of state, you don’t have the platform to make a difference in the place you are living in. You don’t work for Greenpeace (again, we are assuming), so you don’t have a direct hand in protecting the environment.

So what could you do? Hmmm, lets see shall we…

You could be kind to the people you pass during the day. A smile, a kind word, a helpful gesture… these things are not difficult to do, and by doing so, you are promoting a positive outcome. And who knows? The people you are kind to may follow your example. Remember the movie Pay It Forward? An emotional weepie it may be (we are still crying after that ending), but the concept is valid. If you do something kind for another person, they may pass on that kindness through their behaviour, and so and so on. Before you know it, the whole world will be passing on kindness, and that’s thanks to the gesture started by you. Okay, in a perfect world maybe, but you never know how far your kindness will stretch.

You could help the people who are central to your life. To change the world for the better, we often need to start with the people closest to us, so think about those you can help today. Is it your mate who needs help with fitness? Is it a family member who needs a childminder/pet sitter/shoulder to cry on? Is it your neighbour who is too old to manage their chores? Is it your child who is struggling at school? So look at the people in your life. Do they need you? And if they come to you for help, don’t be quick turning them away. By making a difference to their lives, there will be a ripple effect elsewhere.

You could volunteer to help people in your locale. Perhaps there is a homeless shelter you could volunteer in. An environmentalist group may need help with litter picks. A church or community group may require help with children’s activities. Go online, Google search your local area, and get involved. There will be charity work you are suited to, and by doing so, you can make a difference to the lives of others.

You could help people on a global level. You don’t have to get on a plane to help those people far away from you. Think of the world we live in. Think of those people who are struggling in other countries. Think of the charities helping them. What could you do? You could join a charity on a local level to do good to those people far away. You may be able to donate money to a good cause. You might even share global issues with others online through social media or a blog, raising awareness to anybody willing to read what you have to say. Supergirl would fly around the world changing lives, but you can do it from the comfort of your armchair.

So, what do you think? Could you save the world today? By making even small differences, you can encourage others to do the same. And then, little by little, the world will be a better place! Something to think about anyway, but we hope you take action soon. And when we say ‘you,’ we are indeed talking about YOU!! So, put down your copy of Vogue, and get to work!

Waste Isn’t Wonderful: Save Money This Summer

Forget whatever myths you might have heard about the holidays being the most expensive time of the year – it’s summer. Summer knows how to chew through your stacks of cash faster than a swarm of locusts making their way through a Texas farm, which is why you need to know all you can about saving your stockpiles and finding extra money without having to put in extra hours.

Thankfully, we have the answer, and it’s as simple as opening a yoghurt pot: stop wasting money.

Sure, this hack might not fall into the category of secret, but that doesn’t change the fact you’re probably not as innocent as you think. In fact, there’s a pretty phenomenal chance you’re a huuuuge culprit.

So, without further ado, here are some super-simple ways you can stop wasting money this summer and have more pennies to play around with:

  1. Start Buying Generic Brands

If you’re still picking up the branded version of things when you do your weekly grocery shop then you’re wasting money. Lots of it. Cereals, medicines, bleaches, batteries – the only thing that’s different about them is the price and the packaging. Go generic, save money, enjoy life.

  1. Stop Buying Bottled Water

Okay, first things first, buying bottled water is so horrendously bad for the environment. Plastic is the big problem of our time. But that’s not all. In terms of spending $4 on something you can get from your tap has to be one of the most foolish ways to waste your money. Fact. And if you are worried about taste and all that, just buy a filter.

  1. Have Help On Speed Dial

It’s the summer. There are more cars on the roads than ever, you’re taking more trips to the theme parks than before, heading to the local parks, going on mountain bike trails, and loads more things where risk plays a role. Should something happen, doesn’t it make sense to have a personal injury attorney on your side? If you want to get the compensation you deserve, don’t go into the world of law alone.

  1. Bye-Bye New Books

Nothing beats slipping into the backyard with a book, or going on vacation and packing that novel you almost started last summer. It’s what relaxation is meant to feel like. But instead of buying new books (knowing you’ll only read them once), head to that pretty building down the road, the one with the word ‘library’ stamped on it, and borrow a book for free. Or, if you absolutely must own it, then buy used. It’s easy.

  1. Stop Paying For Unused Things

You have cable but you probably only watch 0.8% of the channels on there. You’re a member of a gym, but you haven’t been there since 2014. You’ve got a few different magazines that show up at your door every month, but you’ve not had time to read them in a while. You pay for a landline telephone you never use. These are all a waste of money and all ways you can pinch some pennies.

You Can’t Achieve Your Goals Without These

It’s so important to have goals in life. It’s our goals and aspirations that make us who we are, and help to drive us towards the most success. But achieving goals isn’t something that just everybody does. Achieving goals takes hard work and determination, and that’s just something people don’t have. Plus, you have the chaotic whirlwind that is life demanding so much from us, so fitting in the goals that you might have around that isn’t always going to be possible. However, you don’t want to look back on your life and regret not meeting goals that could have been met, so we want to show you a few ways that you can ensure your goals will become a dream come true.

Financial Stability

You are really going to struggle in life if you don’t have a bit of financial stability. With so many things to pay for, and your wage perhaps not being all you would want it to be, it’s easy to get yourself into a position where you make bad decisions, and bad decisions can lead to a lot of problems with money. One issue that people face is a credit score drop. You actually rely on your credit score more than you think, and if you’ve got one that’s next to nothing, you’d struggle to even get a phone contract in your name. However, don’t always think that your credit report is right. You can get a credit dispute filed to check the validity of the report if you think that something on there is false, or you think your score should be much higher than it is. Don’t panic if your credit score is low however, there’s plenty that you can do to try and bring it up. It’s all about carefully managing your money, and doing things such as putting a little bit on a credit card, then paying it off.

Drive & Determination

It doesn’t matter what we’re talking about here, you’re never going to get where you want to be without some drive and determination in you. Do you ever have those days where you just wake up with so much energy in you, and you have so many goals in mind that you wish to achieve, but by lunch time they’ve all gone out the window because you can’t be bothered? Yeah, we all do that! But, it’s that drive and determination that you need to keep hold of, and channel towards the things that you really want to achieve in life. As they say, if you want something so bad, you’ll make it happen!

Achievable Goals

Some goals that you set yourself just aren’t going to be achievable. If you’re planning on being able to run a marathon in a months time, even though you can barely lift yourself off the sofa at the minute, then you’re not going to achieve it. Start small with your goals, and work your way up to something big. The more goals you achieve, the more you’ll feel like you can do in life.

Feeling Fabulous And Making the Most Of Your Weekends

Don’t you find that the weekends just go too quickly at the moment? You blink and it seems you miss them if you are not careful. Often weekends are there to ensure that you get the rest and relaxation that you need to help you crack on with the next week ahead. But they are also a great opportunity to do different things and really experience the world. So I wanted to share with you some of the ways you can continue to feel fabulous and make the most of your weekends.

Do something to inspire you

Sometimes it is nice to do something that inspires you, and often things like going to a museum or an art gallery does exactly that. It gives you a chance to learn and expand your knowledge while also feeling inspired pin different ways. Websites like VirtosuArt.com can show you a great gallery to attend, however a quick search online will highlight some of the local attractions you have close to you. You may find that there are some great spots locally you don’t know existed.

Exercise and feel good

Exercising is a great way to spend your weekend and while you won’t’ be doing it all day everyday, there are aspects of activity you can do during the weekend that not only give you all the benefits of exercise but can also give you a fun activity and thing to do.
